Hyperliquid Labs completed a seven-day unstaking period and distributed 3.75 million HYPE tokens, valued at approximately $330 million, via an over-the-counter arrangement with an undisclosed institutional buyer. The team confirmed these tokens will not be sold on public markets, marking one of the largest team-related transfers to date and aligning with previously disclosed October vesting schedules for core contributors.
Half of the allocation, totaling 1.875 million HYPE, has already been sent to five OTC buyer wallets, each receiving 375,000 tokens, while the remaining half is pending distribution. This event coincides with HYPE trading at $84, down roughly 14% from its late September all-time high of $97.96. Institutional demand remains subdued, with Hyperliquid-related funds recording no net flows recently and only $12.5 million in inflows over the past two weeks, while derivatives open interest has hovered near yearly lows.
The decision to route a $330 million token distribution through private OTC channels rather than public exchanges represents a strategic effort to mitigate immediate selling pressure on the spot market. By engaging an undisclosed institutional counterparty, Hyperliquid Labs effectively isolates this significant supply event from retail liquidity pools, preventing the large-scale dumping that often accompanies major vesting unlocks. This structure suggests a coordinated approach to managing market impact during a period when broader cryptocurrency sentiment is consolidating and HYPE prices have retreated from recent highs.
However, the underlying weakness in institutional adoption metrics warrants close scrutiny. Despite the successful off-market transfer, the lack of net inflows into Hyperliquid-related funds and the contraction in derivatives open interest indicate that genuine organic demand may be lagging behind the asset's price history. Market participants should monitor whether the remaining 1.875 million tokens are distributed under similar conditions or if future releases face different structural challenges, particularly as technical indicators show momentum cooling and price testing key support levels.
