Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan published an investor note arguing that Bitcoin benefits across nearly every macroeconomic scenario related to artificial intelligence. Using a "Choose Your Own Adventure" analogy, Hougan outlined three distinct paths for the AI trade, concluding that each leads to higher Bitcoin valuations. In the first scenario, if AI delivers "superabundance," productivity explodes and intelligence-based work becomes cheap. Hougan argues this abundance drives value toward genuinely scarce assets that cannot be reproduced, such as waterfront land, gold, and Bitcoin.
In the second scenario, if the AI bubble bursts and triggers a recession similar to 2008, Bitcoin would initially sell off with other risk assets. However, Hougan posits that a government bailout is nearly certain given that the AI buildout represents "the biggest infrastructure investment in the history of America." He suggests the resulting money-printing creates an environment specifically suited for Bitcoin's design. The third path involves a muddle-through scenario with roughly 3% growth and 4% interest rates, where Bitcoin continues to attract ETF flows, advisor adoption, and corporate or sovereign balance-sheet allocations as government debt mounts.
Hougan acknowledged risks to his thesis, including potential global government crackdowns or quantum computing threats to older wallets. He also noted historical volatility, citing Bitcoin’s 50% drop during the 2020 COVID panic before rebounding approximately 20-fold. Despite these caveats, he concluded that for long-term investors, macro questions matter less than most people think because nearly every economic path ultimately favors Bitcoin.
Hougan’s analysis reframes Bitcoin not merely as a speculative asset but as a structural hedge against both extreme technological success and failure. By linking Bitcoin’s value proposition to the inevitability of monetary expansion in a crisis or scarcity appreciation in a boom, he provides a dual-narrative framework that appeals to institutional investors seeking asymmetric upside regardless of the AI outcome. This perspective challenges traditional correlation models, suggesting Bitcoin may decouple from broader risk assets depending on which macro path materializes.
However, the thesis relies heavily on the assumption that governments will respond to an AI-driven recession with massive liquidity injections rather than regulatory tightening or fiscal austerity. While the scale of AI infrastructure investment supports the likelihood of bailouts, it does not guarantee that those funds will flow into crypto markets or that regulatory responses won’t include stricter oversight of digital assets. Investors should monitor whether central bank policies align with Hougan’s prediction of "money-printing" or if geopolitical tensions lead to fragmented monetary systems that could complicate Bitcoin’s role as a universal store of value.
