Crypto asset manager Bitwise has introduced the first US spot exchange-traded product tracking NEAR, offering investors direct exposure through a fund listed on NYSE Arca under the ticker NRR. The ETF carries a 0.75% management fee and holds NEAR directly, with Bitwise intending to stake a significant portion of the fund’s assets. This launch follows a sharp increase in activity on NEAR Intents, the network’s cross-chain transaction protocol, where volume rose to more than $32 billion from less than $1 billion a year ago, according to Bitwise data.
The token recently rallied about 167% over the past month to trade around $4.94, reflecting growing interest in NEAR’s strategic pivot toward AI agents and cross-chain infrastructure initiated in 2024. Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan noted that while most current activity remains human-driven, the firm sees autonomous software as a key use case, aligning with recent BlackRock research suggesting AI could drive demand for blockchain-based payment infrastructure. NRR joins Bitwise’s existing US lineup of single-asset crypto products, which includes Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, and Hyperliquid. The ETF development coincides with NEAR Intents blocking over $50 million in attempted transfers linked to the $387.5 million Bitget hack earlier this week.
The introduction of a spot NEAR ETF signals a maturing regulatory environment that allows institutional capital to access layer-1 assets beyond the major incumbents like Bitcoin and Ethereum. By integrating staking into the fund structure, Bitwise addresses yield generation, a critical factor for institutional adoption, while leveraging NEAR’s specific utility in cross-chain abstraction. The surge in NEAR Intents volume suggests that the network’s infrastructure is gaining traction as a functional tool for interoperability, rather than just a speculative asset, providing a fundamental basis for the ETF’s investment thesis.
However, the reliance on AI agent narratives introduces operational and reputational risks tied to unproven technology cycles. While BlackRock’s endorsement of AI as a structural catalyst lends credibility, the actual revenue-generating capacity of autonomous agents remains nascent. Investors must monitor whether the technical advantages of NEAR’s intent-based architecture can sustain growth independent of speculative hype, particularly given the security challenges highlighted by the recent Bitget hack attempts. The success of this product will likely depend on demonstrating tangible utility in machine-to-machine transactions rather than relying solely on token price appreciation.
