Bitwise Asset Management announced plans to liquidate its Bitwise Dogecoin ETF (BWOW) in October, less than a year after the product's November 2025 launch. The firm cited the need to optimize its product range to meet evolving investor needs as the reason for closure. As of Sept. 9, the fund held approximately $688,000 in net assets.
The final trading day for BWOW shares on NYSE Arca is expected to be Oct. 14. Following this date, Bitwise will convert the fund’s Dogecoin holdings to cash and cease creating new shares. Remaining shareholders will receive cash distributions based on their shares' net asset value on Oct. 21, with payments anticipated around Oct. 22 through brokers or financial intermediaries.
This development highlights the fragility of niche crypto exchange-traded products that fail to achieve sufficient scale shortly after inception. While the broader institutional adoption of digital assets continues, individual funds must demonstrate sustained demand to justify operational costs and regulatory compliance burdens. The rapid timeline from launch to liquidation underscores how quickly market interest can evaporate for specific altcoin exposure vehicles.
For the crypto infrastructure sector, this serves as a cautionary signal regarding product viability. Asset managers may face increased scrutiny when launching specialized ETFs, potentially leading to more conservative approaches toward new listings. Investors should monitor whether other small-cap crypto funds experience similar outflows, as liquidity constraints often accelerate closures in this asset class.
