Coinbase has launched fixed-rate loans powered by decentralized lending protocol Morpho, allowing users to borrow USDC against Bitcoin with locked interest rates and repayment dates. This product represents the first enterprise-scale deployment of Morpho Midnight, a protocol version designed for fixed rates and defined maturities executed natively on-chain. In this arrangement, Coinbase manages the user experience through its app, while Morpho provides the credit infrastructure and Base handles settlement.
The new offering complements Coinbase’s existing variable-rate loans, which also utilize Morpho technology. Since introducing Bitcoin-backed borrowing on Base in early 2025, the business has grown to exceed $1.4 billion in active loans backed by approximately $3 billion in collateral. The platform has previously expanded accepted collateral to include assets such as XRP and Dogecoin. However, the sector faces volatility risks; a sharp drop in Bitcoin and Ethereum prices in February triggered record liquidations across Coinbase’s loan book.
This development signals a maturation of on-chain lending infrastructure by introducing traditional credit market fundamentals—certainty of cost and duration—to a major centralized exchange interface. By locking in rates and repayment dates, Coinbase addresses a primary friction point for institutional and retail borrowers who have historically faced unpredictable costs due to floating rate models. The integration demonstrates that sophisticated financial products can be layered atop open protocols like Morpho without requiring exchanges to rebuild underlying credit stacks from scratch, potentially accelerating the adoption of decentralized finance primitives within regulated environments.
Looking ahead, the expansion of collateral types beyond Bitcoin to tokenized stocks and real-world assets, as indicated by Morpho, suggests a broader strategy to bridge traditional finance with blockchain settlement layers. While the current focus is on Bitcoin, the architectural readiness for other asset classes positions this partnership as a testbed for wider institutional crypto adoption. Market participants should monitor how these fixed-rate instruments perform during periods of high volatility, given the recent history of significant liquidations when collateral values declined sharply.
