Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated at Token2049 that the crypto industry’s heavy financial backing of US Republicans has alienated Democrats, whose support is essential for passing federal crypto legislation such as the CLARITY Act. Speaking alongside OKX CEO Star Xu, Cuomo noted that while the industry invested heavily in the Republican Party to advance its agenda, this strategy created a partisan divide. Data from Tech Influence Watch indicates that crypto-focused political action committees spent $54.3 million supporting Republicans in the 2026 election cycle, compared to $26.2 million for Democrats, with an additional $23.2 million spent opposing Democratic candidates.

The legislative landscape reflects this tension. In July 2025, the CLARITY Act passed the House with support from 78 Democrats and 216 Republicans, though 134 Democrats voted against it. Similarly, the GENIUS Act received backing from 18 Democratic senators before passing the Senate in June 2025. However, a September procedural vote saw all Senate Democrats and four Republicans oppose advancing the CLARITY Act, citing concerns over potential conflicts of interest involving Trump’s crypto businesses. Despite these hurdles, seven Democratic senators later reaffirmed their commitment to the bill. Meanwhile, the Fairshake PAC announced plans to support 32 House candidates in November’s midterms, including 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats, signaling a slight shift toward bipartisan engagement.
