NEAR Intents experienced a security breach resulting in the theft of approximately $3.8 million, prompting a temporary shutdown of its cross-chain swap infrastructure. The vulnerability existed in the layer responsible for moving funds in and out of the main contract holding user assets. On-chain analyst ZachXBT traced the stolen funds to KuCoin, where they were converted into bitcoin. The NEAR team reported the incident to law enforcement and stated that a comprehensive post-mortem report would be released.
The response protocol was executed rapidly, with the contract-side vulnerability patched and core services restored within roughly one hour. However, deposits and withdrawals across 11 networks, including BNB Chain, Polygon, and Optimism, remained suspended for an additional 12 hours while further fixes were implemented. The platform confirmed that every affected user would be reimbursed in full. Following the news, the NEAR token price fell nearly 9% to $4.86, and shares of the Bitwise NEAR ETF dropped more than 7%. This decline occurred just two days after the ETF's launch, which had cited network growth as a key investment thesis.
This incident highlights the operational resilience of established DeFi protocols when facing targeted exploits. Unlike larger breaches that result in prolonged freezes or significant capital loss for users, NEAR Intents demonstrated a contained damage scenario through rapid detection, patching, and transparent communication. The decision to fully reimburse users mitigates immediate reputational harm and preserves trust in the protocol’s custody mechanisms, distinguishing this event from high-profile failures like the Bitget or MetaMask incidents mentioned in broader market commentary.
From a market structure perspective, the timing of the hack poses specific challenges for newly launched institutional products. The Bitwise NEAR ETF’s first week coincided with a security failure on a major ecosystem application, potentially testing investor confidence in the underlying network’s safety standards. While some analysts characterize the efficient response as a "bullish" signal regarding developer competence, the short-term price volatility suggests markets are still weighing the risk of infrastructure vulnerabilities against the benefits of privacy-focused cross-chain tools. Future regulatory scrutiny may focus on how such rapid remediation capabilities are integrated into compliance frameworks for exchange-traded crypto products.
