Two weeks after the Clarity Act failed in the Senate with a 49-50 vote, Stand With Crypto announced its first set of Senate endorsements. The advocacy group, founded by Coinbase in 2023, is backing Republican Jon Husted against incumbent Sherrod Brown in Ohio, as well as Republican Ashley Hinson in Iowa and Democrat Chris Pappas in New Hampshire. On the House side, the group supports Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa and Shomari Figures in Alabama, with additional advertising planned for six races.
The strategic focus on Ohio stems from the potential impact on the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees financial regulation. If Brown retains his seat, he maintains a powerful position within that committee; conversely, an Husted victory could shift the balance toward pro-crypto leadership. Although Stand With Crypto does not donate directly, it grades candidates and mobilizes its three million supporters. This effort coincides with broader industry political spending approaching $200 million this cycle, including a $30 million campaign by Fairshake PAC against Brown. The Clarity Act’s failure was attributed largely to Democratic concerns regarding President Trump’s crypto businesses, yet the group continues to endorse Democrats who support favorable crypto policies.
The pivot from legislative lobbying to electoral intervention marks a structural change in how the crypto industry engages with U.S. governance. By targeting specific Senate races, particularly in Ohio, the industry aims to secure long-term regulatory stability rather than relying on transient legislative windows. The endorsement of both Republicans and Democrats suggests a pragmatic approach focused on individual policy positions rather than party alignment, reflecting the industry's desire to insulate itself from partisan volatility. This strategy acknowledges that control of key committee chairs, such as those on the Senate Banking Committee, dictates the pace and nature of future rulemaking more effectively than broad congressional support alone.
Market participants should monitor the correlation between these electoral outcomes and subsequent regulatory enforcement actions. The substantial capital deployed through associated PACs indicates a high-stakes bet on institutional adoption and legal clarity. However, the continued fragmentation of political support, evidenced by the mixed-party endorsements, highlights the difficulty of achieving a unified national framework. The outcome of these races will likely determine whether the next administration faces a cooperative or adversarial Congress regarding digital asset custody, market structure, and stablecoin regulations.
