US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds returned to net positive flows on the first trading day of October, recording $102.7 million in inflows on Thursday according to SoSoValue data. This movement followed a session of $148.7 million in net outflows on Wednesday. The combined net assets of these funds rose to $109.3 billion, with cumulative net inflows reaching $57.6 billion since their inception.
The shift marks a continuation of strong institutional demand observed throughout the third quarter, which concluded with $6.34 billion in net inflows, including $2.65 billion in September alone. During this period, Bitcoin’s price increased by 42.71%, trading at approximately $85,900 at the time of publication, up 2.1% over the preceding 24 hours. While Bitcoin ETFs saw renewed interest, US spot Ether ETFs recorded $55.4 million in net outflows on Thursday, extending a three-day streak of losses totaling about $118 million. Solana ETFs also posted around $6 million in net outflows, whereas XRP ETFs attracted $4 million in net inflows.
The immediate reversal from significant Wednesday outflows to substantial Thursday inflows suggests that institutional capital allocation into Bitcoin remains highly sensitive to short-term price action and broader market sentiment indicators. With the Crypto Fear & Greed Index holding steady in "Greed" territory at 72, the $102.7 million influx indicates that investors are not yet retreating despite the volatility implied by the prior day's $148.7 million exit. This behavior highlights the dual nature of current ETF flows: they serve as both a barometer for retail and institutional confidence and a mechanism for tactical rebalancing within crypto portfolios.
Divergent performance across different asset classes underscores a maturing market structure where capital is no longer flowing indiscriminately into all digital assets. While Bitcoin benefited from its status as a primary institutional proxy, the sustained outflows from Ether and Solana ETFs point to specific concerns regarding those networks' fundamentals or regulatory clarity relative to Bitcoin. For compliance officers and fund managers, this differentiation requires careful monitoring of custody and infrastructure risks associated with altcoins, as the market appears to be consolidating liquidity around the most established regulatory frameworks.
