Zcash network participants holding ZEC in the legacy Sprout shielded pool are advised to migrate funds prior to the planned NU7 upgrade, or risk rendering them unspendable. Under Zcash Improvement Proposal-2003, the NU7 protocol change will cease accepting the older transaction format required to spend Sprout funds. While the proposal does not burn these assets and leaves open the theoretical possibility of restoring access later, it explicitly warns that holders may never regain the ability to spend funds left in the pool.
The upgrade is scheduled for mainnet activation on Nov. 5, following a testnet launch on Oct. 6 and a final go/no-go decision expected on Oct. 20. In addition to addressing the Sprout pool issue, NU7 aims to reduce Zcash’s target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds while preserving the network’s existing halving schedule. Community members, including user “vaspholdings” and co-founder Zooko Wilcox, have urged holders to inspect old wallets for Sprout ZEC, as only funds within this specific pool face the proposed restriction. At the time of reporting, ZEC traded at $1,627.82, reflecting an 8% rise over the past 24 hours.
The potential freezing of assets in the Sprout pool highlights the operational risks inherent in long-lived privacy networks undergoing structural upgrades. By discontinuing support for the legacy transaction format, Zcash prioritizes network efficiency and modern cryptographic standards over backward compatibility for dormant holdings. This decision forces a clear distinction between active liquidity and stranded capital, potentially impacting market perception of the asset's fungibility if significant volumes remain unmigrated. The explicit warning that funds may become permanently inaccessible underscores the necessity for rigorous pre-upgrade due diligence by institutional custodians and individual holders alike.
From a market structure perspective, the reduction in block time to 25 seconds signals a strategic pivot toward higher throughput and improved user experience, aligning Zcash more closely with mainstream payment expectations. However, the success of this transition depends heavily on community coordination and the effectiveness of communication channels like the Zcash Community Forum. If the migration deadline passes with substantial Sprout balances untouched, it could create a permanent supply anomaly, complicating future audits and regulatory compliance efforts regarding total circulating supply. Stakeholders should monitor the Oct. 20 decision point closely, as any delay or modification to the timeline would significantly alter the risk profile for wallet operators.
