CSD BR, a Brazilian financial market infrastructure firm, has entered into a strategic partnership with blockchain provider Ripple. The initial phase involves utilizing the XRP Ledger as an auxiliary layer for recording and auditing financial assets, while CSD BR’s existing systems remain the official source of record for registration, deposit, and settlement. This collaboration aims to evaluate improvements in transparency, traceability, automation, and efficiency within Brazil's regulated capital markets.
Silvio Pegado, managing director of Ripple for Latin America, described the move as a significant milestone by transitioning from pilots to live record-keeping infrastructure. Daniel Polano Spreafico, head of products and clients at CSD BR, stated the goal is to assess technology performance under real operating conditions. Following validation, the partners plan to expand blockchain usage to native asset issuance and trading among authorized participants, potentially extending the model to other international markets.
The integration of public blockchain ledgers like the XRP Ledger into national financial market infrastructures represents a shift from experimental pilots to operational utility. By retaining traditional systems as the primary source of truth while using blockchain for auditing, CSD BR addresses regulatory concerns regarding data integrity and legal enforceability. This hybrid approach allows institutions to test distributed ledger benefits—such as enhanced traceability and automation—without immediately overhauling core settlement mechanisms, thereby reducing operational risk during adoption.
This development highlights the growing demand for interoperable compliance tools in emerging markets. As regulators worldwide scrutinize crypto taxation and stablecoin classifications, established financial entities are leveraging blockchain for transparency rather than speculative trading. The success of this initiative could serve as a template for other jurisdictions seeking to modernize capital market infrastructure while maintaining strict regulatory oversight, signaling that institutional adoption is increasingly focused on backend efficiency and auditability.
