THORChain announced on October 2 that it has launched its Zcash (ZEC) liquidity pool following the completion of a network-wide node churn. The protocol confirmed that all nodes are now monitoring the Zcash blockchain, creating a permissionless liquidity venue within its cross-chain ecosystem. However, direct native ZEC trading is not yet active and represents the subsequent stage in the integration process.
The launch follows months of technical development, including the v3.16.0 upgrade which introduced Zcash-specific UTXO handling and added ZEC to THORChain’s enshrined oracle for native price data. Developers also resolved transaction-signing inconsistencies regarding expiry heights and adjusted retry logic to ensure consistency. THORChain advised users to exercise caution as initial liquidity remains shallow, noting that depth will grow over time. The protocol did not disclose current liquidity figures or provide a specific date for enabling swaps, nor did it clarify if shielded transactions will be supported.
This activation signifies a critical infrastructure milestone for THORChain, moving Zcash from a monitored state to an integrated liquidity asset. By completing the node churn and oracle integration, the protocol has established the necessary technical groundwork for cross-chain interoperability without relying on centralized exchanges. The distinction between pool availability and trading activation highlights a phased rollout strategy designed to stabilize the network before exposing it to full swap volume.
From a market structure perspective, the emphasis on shallow initial liquidity serves as a risk management signal for early participants. Without disclosed depth metrics or a timeline for trading enablement, institutional adoption may remain cautious until slippage risks are mitigated through organic liquidity growth. Furthermore, the ambiguity surrounding support for shielded ZEC transactions introduces regulatory and operational uncertainty, potentially limiting the asset's utility for privacy-focused traders who require full functionality.
