THORChain announced on October 2 that it has launched a new liquidity pool for Zcash (ZEC) after completing a network-wide node churn. This integration allows all network nodes to actively monitor the Zcash blockchain, creating a permissionless liquidity venue within THORChain's decentralized cross-chain ecosystem. However, the protocol clarified that native ZEC trading is not yet available, identifying this as the next phase of development.
The launch follows months of technical preparation, including the v3.16.0 upgrade which introduced Zcash-specific UTXO management and refined remote procedure call logic. Engineers also resolved transaction signing inconsistencies related to Zcash’s unique expiry mechanism during September. Currently, liquidity in the pool is described as shallow, with THORChain advising users to exercise caution due to potential slippage. The team has not specified the current liquidity depth or an exact date for activating native swaps, though they expect liquidity to grow over time.
This deployment represents a significant infrastructure milestone for THORChain, extending its cross-chain capabilities to include privacy-focused assets without relying on centralized intermediaries. By integrating Zcash into its enshrined oracle and adjusting consensus mechanisms for UTXO handling, the protocol demonstrates the technical complexity required to support diverse blockchain architectures. The phased approach, separating liquidity provision from active trading, highlights the operational caution necessary when introducing new assets to decentralized exchange networks.
From a market structure perspective, the initial lack of deep liquidity poses risks for early adopters, particularly regarding price impact on larger trades. The uncertainty surrounding shielded transaction support leaves the full utility of Zcash within the THORChain ecosystem undefined. Stakeholders should monitor the timeline for enabling native swaps and observe how liquidity providers respond to the permissionless venue, as these factors will determine the asset's viability for institutional and retail cross-chain strategies.
