Pretty Good Policy for Zcash (PGPZ), an advocacy group focused on the privacy-oriented cryptocurrency ecosystem, has filed to lobby in Washington. The registration, effective October 1, names executive director Divij Pandya as its sole lobbyist. Key issues listed include the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act and two digital asset tax proposals.
PGPZ was launched in June this year, evolving from Pretty Good Policy for Crypto, which was initiated by Electric Coin Co. in 2022. The predecessor organization hosted policy roundtables and organized a congressional briefing on encryption technologies in 2023. Paul Brigner, founder of PGPZ and chief policy and regulatory officer at ZODL, stated the objective is to ensure credible policy engagement for Zcash in Washington. In August, the Zcash Community Grants approved a $750,000 grant to fund PGPZ’s first year of operations.
The formal registration of PGPZ marks a strategic shift for the Zcash ecosystem from informal advocacy to structured political engagement. By naming specific legislative targets like the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act and tax proposals, the group signals an intent to directly influence the regulatory framework governing privacy-preserving assets. This move aligns with broader industry efforts to secure legal clarity amidst increasing scrutiny of crypto infrastructure.
Securing a $750,000 grant from community funds demonstrates institutional commitment to sustaining this lobbying effort over its initial year. The appointment of a single named lobbyist suggests a focused approach to navigating complex Washington policy discussions. Success will depend on whether policymakers perceive privacy-preserving digital cash as compatible with public interest goals, a central argument highlighted by PGPZ leadership.
