Bitcoin is currently testing its 20-month simple moving average (SMA), a trend line that onchain analytics platform CryptoQuant identifies as an "inflection frontier" historically associated with the start of new macro highs. As of October 16, this SMA sits at $87,165, serving as the central basis for the Bollinger Bands metric used in CryptoQuant’s market cycle signals tool. The upper and lower bands are positioned at $121,640 and $52,694, respectively. CryptoQuant describes the zone between the lower band and the SMA as an "accumulation base," while noting that price previously broke below the SMA from above in December 2025, marking a point of investor capitulation.
The current attempt to reclaim the 20-month SMA follows a market reset concluded just over a year after Bitcoin’s all-time high of $124,709 recorded on October 6, 2025. CryptoQuant contributor GugaOnChain noted that successful breakouts from this capitulation zone have historically led to new cycle highs. Although the upper Bollinger Band currently sits below Bitcoin’s most recent all-time high of $126,200 from October 2025, the platform anticipates the next rally will extend beyond that level. This outlook contrasts with retail sentiment, which views the current support zone around $82,442 as a potential top.
Technical resistance remains significant due to confluence between the 20-month SMA and Bitcoin’s opening level for 2026 at $87,490. Exchange order books show large walls of ask liquidity near these levels. Despite broader macroeconomic headwinds affecting crypto and risk assets, CryptoQuant maintains an optimistic stance. CEO Ki Young Ju stated in late August that the bear market was "over" based on the bull-bear market cycle indicator, which showed bullish momentum accelerating with a reading of 0.186 compared to 0.042 in August.
The reclamation of the 20-month SMA represents a critical technical threshold for Bitcoin, shifting market dynamics from accumulation to potential expansion. By defining this moving average as an "inflection frontier," CryptoQuant highlights how long-term trend lines often dictate institutional entry points and algorithmic trading strategies. The convergence of this SMA with the 2026 opening price creates a dense resistance area, suggesting that any breakout requires substantial volume absorption to overcome existing sell-side liquidity walls.
From a Market Structure perspective, the divergence between retail fear at lower support zones and analyst optimism regarding higher targets indicates a potential mispricing of momentum. If historical patterns hold, breaking the inflection frontier could trigger a cascade of short-covering and new capital inflows, pushing prices toward previous all-time highs. However, the reliance on onchain metrics like the bull-bear cycle indicator requires caution, as these tools interpret past profitability data rather than guarantee future price action amidst ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty.
