NEAR Protocol’s native token entered the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization on Thursday, according to CoinGecko data. This milestone follows a 140% increase in value over the preceding 30 days. At the time of reporting, NEAR traded at approximately $5.51, marking a 7% gain over the previous 24 hours. The asset’s total market capitalization reached about $7.2 billion, surpassing Stellar (XLM), which held a market cap of nearly $7 billion. Daily trading volume for NEAR was recorded at roughly $1.2 billion.
The token’s ascent coincides with significant ecosystem developments and institutional milestones. On September 29, Bitwise launched the first US spot exchange-traded product tracking NEAR, trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker NRR. This fund provides investors exposure to the asset without requiring direct custody. Additionally, NEAR Intents, a cross-chain trading protocol, has processed over $31 billion in cumulative transaction volume. Despite this growth, the network faced a security challenge when NEAR Intents suffered a $3.8 million exploit involving its deposit and withdrawal infrastructure. General Manager Alex Shevchenko confirmed on October 2 that all stolen funds had been returned, one day after the breach was disclosed.
NEAR’s entry into the top 20 digital assets reflects a convergence of strong price momentum and expanding institutional access. The launch of the Bitwise spot ETP on NYSE Arca marks a critical step in legitimizing the token within traditional finance frameworks, offering regulated exposure that may attract broader capital inflows. This development underscores how regulatory-compliant products can directly influence market structure and ranking dynamics for mid-cap assets. The substantial trading volume and market cap gains suggest that the new financial instrument is effectively integrating NEAR into mainstream investment portfolios, reducing friction for non-crypto-native participants.
However, the recent $3.8 million exploit on NEAR Intents highlights persistent operational risks within decentralized infrastructure, even as cumulative volumes exceed $31 billion. While the rapid return of funds mitigated immediate financial damage, the incident serves as a reminder that security vulnerabilities remain a key consideration for institutional adoption. Market observers will likely monitor whether the robustness of cross-chain protocols like NEAR Intents can sustain high-volume activity without further breaches, as reliability becomes increasingly central to maintaining investor confidence alongside regulatory progress.
