Zcash has activated its NU7 network upgrade on testnet, moving planned protocol changes into live testing approximately one month before the targeted mainnet rollout. According to the ZecBlock testnet explorer, the activation occurred at block 4,465,026 on October 4 at 18:21:45 UTC. The NU7 upgrade aims to reduce the network’s target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. It also disables version 4 transactions and integrates a Network Sustainability Mechanism that redirects a portion of transaction fees into future block rewards.
The deprecation of version 4 transactions renders ZEC held in the legacy Sprout shielded pool unspendable unless users migrate funds prior to full activation. The Zcash Foundation instructed testnet operators to use the release candidate to test the upgrade under real conditions. Developers are scheduled to make a final decision on mainnet activation and set the specific height on October 20, with the mainnet launch currently targeted for November 5.
The activation of NU7 on testnet marks a critical operational milestone for Zcash, signaling confidence in the technical stability of significant consensus changes. By reducing block spacing from 75 to 25 seconds, the network addresses long-standing latency issues, potentially improving user experience and transaction throughput. However, the simultaneous disablement of version 4 transactions introduces immediate compliance and operational risks for holders of legacy Sprout shielded funds, who must actively migrate assets to avoid permanent loss. This dual focus on performance enhancement and security hardening reflects a strategic pivot toward modernizing infrastructure while enforcing stricter cryptographic standards.
From an institutional adoption perspective, the implementation of the Network Sustainability Mechanism represents a structural shift in how Zcash manages economic incentives. Redirecting transaction fees to block rewards may alter miner behavior and network security economics, requiring careful monitoring during the testnet phase. The tight timeline between the October 20 developer decision and the November 5 mainnet target leaves little margin for error if critical bugs emerge during live testing. Stakeholders should watch for any delays in the final activation height determination, as this will directly impact the predictability of the network's transition and the broader market's perception of Zcash's governance efficiency.
